The Miners' Underground Tramway, which in 1972 pioneered the opening of the Mines to visitors, has now carried over 3 million people, including members of the Royal Family, to explore the 1846 network of tunnels and unbelievably large caverns. Travelling into the mine on specially designed trains, visitors
experience for themselves the working conditions of Victorian miners and discover how millions of tons of
rock were moved using only primitive tools, gunpowder and human muscle.

The Deep Mine offers an alternative view of slate mining. An ingeniously engineered vehicle conveys
passengers down a 30° underground incline into the lower depths of the mine. Here helmeted visitors walk through exciting chambers and tunnels on a tour unfolding the saga of the men who mined the slate. The circular tour with exciting vistas and undergrounder lake leads down to a yet deeper level, and the Incline Railway is eventually rejoined to return to the surface. Please note that this tour has 61 steps down and 71 back up.

On the surface, many other attractions complete an enjoyable visit. Exhibitions on the mine tramways and
slate mining, together with the old smithy and the slate mill and the Village Square with its Victorian Shops,
provide the opportunity to browse at leisure.

Refreshment is provided for all tastes, from the Licensed Restaurant in the old Manager's House to the
Caverns Café and the Miners' Arms Victorian Pub.

Slate engraving can be seen in the Workshop, and the shops provide a wide range of gifts and crafts with a particular emphasis on slate.

The caverns are just 25 miles from the new A55 North Wales Coast Expressway, and 10 miles from
Betws-y-Coed and the A5. Llechwedd Slate Caverns are beside the A470 road from Llandudno into Mid Wales and Cardigan Bay.

Beware of confusing road signs! Llechwedd is on the LEFT when travelling DOWN hill from
Betws-y-Coed, and on the RIGHT when travelling UP from Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Buses link Llechwedd to Blaenau Ffestiniog station and the picturesque narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway,
for which tickets may also be bought at Llechwedd; the station is also served by trains from Llandudno
Junction.
